NHS Improvement suspends its new agency rule

Under its original plans, the regulator NHS Improvement had told trusts in England that from 1 April 2017 they should not employ any agency workers who hold substantive roles at other NHS employers.

However NHS Improvement has since suspended the introduction of its new rule preventing permanent NHS staff from doing agency shifts at other health service providers. Following the raising of concerns by nurses, NHS Improvement has written to trusts in NHS England telling them to “pause” the start of the controversial rule, in order to “engage with the sector”.
