Intolerance Tests

If you are suffering from food allergies, substance allergies or if you suspect that your body is intolerant of certain foods, there are a wide range of tests available. The tests work by checking for antibodies that signify a reaction to specific substances.

Immunoglobulins (IgE, IgG, IgM)

*** Please note – all tests for IgE antibodies as shown below are also available for IgG and IgM antibodies. We will confirm the antibody type when you contact us.

An immunoglobulin test measures the level of certain immunoglobulins, or antibodies, in the blood. Antibodies are proteins made by the immune system to fight antigens, such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins.

The three subclasses of antibodies are:

  • Immunoglobulin G (IgG), the most abundant type of antibody, is found in all body fluids and protects against bacterial and viral infections.
  • Immunoglobulin M (IgM), which is found mainly in the blood and lymph fluid, is the first antibody to be made by the body to fight a new infection.
  • Immunoglobulin E (IgE), which is associated mainly with allergic reactions (when the immune system overreacts to environmental antigens such as pollen or pet dander). It is found in the lungs, skin, and mucous membranes.

IgA, IgG, and IgM are often measured together. That way, they can give doctors important information about immune system functioning, especially relating to infection or autoimmune disease.

Anaphylaxis

In certain cases, immunological over-reaction can lead to anaphylaxis – a severe allergic reaction to food, medication, venom and various substances.

Common causes include foods such as peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, cashews, and Brazil nuts), sesame, fish, shellfish, dairy products and eggs.

Non-food causes include wasp or bee stings, natural latex (rubber), penicillin or any other drug or injection.
Some symptoms that can be caused through an allergic reaction:

  • Itching or flushing of the skin
  • Hives anywhere on the body
  • Swelling of throat and mouth
  • Difficulty in swallowing or speaking
  • Increased heart rate
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Inability to lose weight
  • Heartburn
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Water retention
  • Fatigue
  • Irritable bowel Syndrome
  • Food cravings
  • Water retention

The tests we offer screen for antibodies in your blood and should allow you to discover or rule out the possible cause for your condition.
